Thirteen, the beginning of sweet teenage is all set for a kid to face the camera and taught her to be bold in ups and downs and she rushed on the kawasaki ... rocky...rakhi... with the magic mantra... as naughty pinky... portrayed stylishly with a classic touch of Bapu Bomma ... yes, it's the ever charming beauty Charmi.

From a modeling assignment in Mumbai she graduated to her first film. Since her first film she has starred in T. Rajendar's film titled 'Kaadhal Azhivadillai' which was titled 'Kuradochadu' in Telugu. After that original foray into Telugu cinema she wandered off to do more films in Tamil and even one in Malayalam. After delivering critically acclaimed perfomance by playing the title role ‘Mantra’, Charmi transformed herself into Bapu Bomma in Sundarakanda as pretty monkey pinky.

Excerpts of an exclusive interview:

You did Telugu and then Tamil and there after Malayalam and now Telugu films. Don't you think you should stay put in one language?

"I don't see any reason why. After all even Telugu which was the language of my first film was not in my mother tongue. So checking out all languages is the best option for me besides I do not know where I will taste success. I did a film with Silambarasan in Tamil and now the offers are coming in".

So you have yet to decide on any one language?

"Absolutely right. I have not decided yet. It will all depend on which language the offers are coming in for. I will be glad to stick to one if there is a clear indication". But if the offers start to come in thick and fast I guess you will then decide? "Just numbers don't make sense. If these films don't come with an attractive package I may not take them.

"After all I'm in it for the Money

And if that doesn't add up it makes no sense to work oneself to the bone".

"It was Krishna Vamsi's straight talking that made me loose weight.

He actually told me that I if I stayed fat I would be unfit for cinema.

That made me shape up in a hurry".

Don't you want to be considered as being No 1?

"Generally this stuff about being No 1 is all about the money so if I am being offered good money then it automatically means that I am somewhere at the top otherwise it means I am nowhere. I must admit that she is right because being the criteria for being called No 1 is all about the actor's fee. All this talk about great acting talent is generally baloney. The public is the final arbiter. If they like a particular actress then they go out to watch her and if she has any brains she will hold out for as much as the market will bear.

Tell us about Bapu..?
I am in love with Bapu after working for Sundarakanda. He is the cutest person I ever met. I miss him so much after the shooting as a director. I share a very good rapport with him. He is a great director. You will realize about it when you work with him.

How did you manage Telugu looks as Bapu bomma?
I did not try to do anything deliberately. Bapu polished me into his style.

Tell us about ‘Monkey lanti Pinky’ character played by you?
Pinky character is very close to my real personality. She is naughty, playful, intelligent, smart, yet innocent. You can see lot of Charmme in Pinky character. I did the character from my heart.

charmi3Bapu had dusky heroines in most of his films. How did you fit in?
I don’t know about dusky part of it. He is fond of my color and skin complexion.

How did Mantra happen?
I had been flooded with many women-oriented projects after AOR. But I rejected them all. I took little time before accepting Mantra as the producers and director were new. But I saw passion and zeal in them. I rejected women oriented films earlier because the characters were gloomy. I wanted to do a women oriented film which demands both glamour and performance from me. Mantra character is the one. Mantra is a thriller which misguides the viewers making them to think that it’s a horror film. Producers and the director had lots of planning and they had done tremendous home work even before starting the project. It impressed me.

How is the response to Mantra?
When the unit members informed me about excellent response I was under impression that there were trying to put me in good spirits. After a week, I realized that the film is a hit. It generated extraordinary openings. Young girls and boys watched the film. It reached people from all walks of life.

How was the experience of working with Krishna Vamsi?

"He is simply amazing. One tends to think that you know a fair bit about acting after your first movie but when you work with someone like Krishna Vamsi you realise acting is a life long learning experience. The shades within a given situation are so vast and varied that just thinking about the different aspects of an emotion makes your head spin".

What about the men in your life?

" I don't have any special man or a boy friend". My closest friends are my Dad and Krishna Vamsi. My Dad is wonderful but Krishna Vamsi put me straight. I had put on a lot of weight and it was his straight talking that made me loose weight. He actually told me that I if I stayed fat I would be unfit for cinema. That made me shape up in a hurry".

When you work with someone like Krishna Vamsi,
you realise - "Acting is a life long learning experience".

charmiPeople say that you are a fun loving girl and have no airs about you. What's life like after the day's shoot? Do you mix around with the crew?

"When I was a beginner I used to be very trusting and was quite open about matters but now I observe before I say anything".

Has anything happened to you for you to be vary?

"No, but you know how it is, when you are a rank new comer you tend to take everything on face value but as you gain experience you become careful. I think as an actress I get to interact and study so many different kinds of people. No other walk of life offers you so many opportunities to study people up close"

Your first two films flopped or washed out should be the right saying. How did you overcome with early failure?
"I cried myself before I sleep every night for a long time. I just could not take it. My heart felt like a lump of steel in my chest. You need a good support system to come out of that".

"No actor or actress can be so arrogant and full of themselves to think

that a film is carried entirely on his or her shoulders".

charmiBut you are back in the movies. What did you do?

"Over time I realised that I cannot be held entirely responsible. True I have to take a major share in the blame but then there are so many people involved in the making of a film. There is the script writer, the art director, the costumer and of course the Director himself. No actor or actress can be so arrogant and full of themselves to think that a film is carried entirely on his or her shoulders. Now I try and analyse the probable cause of failure. now you can see and justify why it flopped" (smiles)

Tell us how you pass time when you are not on the sets. Tell us about your favourite times.

"I am a fitness girl. I am not a fitness freak but I like to look fit and the only way you can look fit is by exercising so I do a lot of workouts in the gym. I also read. I always carry a good book on the sets so time flies. I can cook too. I do pretty good non vegetarian stuff".

Do you have problems moving around in Hyderabad?

No I don't. Actually that is the problem. I don't get mobbed. I wish I were popular enough to be. Once I went to the Kanaka Durga temple in Vijayawada. Not a single person recognized me. My ego was crushed until I decided to roll along the temple parikrama. That's when I got recognized. That felt good too.

charmiYou said you read so can you tell me the title of a book you read recently?

"It may not be the last book I read but Shiv Khera's books motivate me a lot. I carry it around when I go on a shoot". She is called for a shot but before she goes away I ask her who she thinks is good for her.
"Krishna Vamsi and Bapu. They are the best"

What are your future projects?
I am doing a Tamil film called Laadam in the direction of Prabhu Solomon. I am also acting in a Telugu in the direction of Nidhi Prasad. I have many more projects at hand for which I need to just go ahea
